Boosting Your Fertility During This Pandemic

We are nine months into a whole new world, and it can feel like nothing is the same as it used to be. Even so, when it comes to the physiologic processes involved with reproduction – everything is exactly as it used to be.

All of the same things we encouraged patients to focus on in the past are the same when it comes to boosting fertility during COVID 19. That said, there are a few items we want to emphasize more in a time when people may be feeling more anxious or stressed on a daily basis.

Make Sex, Stress-Management & Healthy Sleep Habits a Priority for Fertility

Since your reproductive system is nestled right in the core of your physical being, it makes perfect sense that the best way to facilitate healthy reproduction is to live a healthy lifestyle on all fronts. To this aim, we recommend visiting posts that focus specifically on diet and lifestyle choices.

Those include:

In the continuing wake of the pandemic, however, we want to focus on the things our patients can do to boost their fertility during COVID 19 restrictions and health protocols. This includes everything from having sex regularly as well as timing intercourse for fertliity, reducing stress, and establishing healthy sleep habits.

Schedule a Preconception Appointment with Your OB/GYN

We understand that added COVID-19 protocols make it less convenient to visit your general physician and women’s wellness healthcare providers. That said, it is as important as ever to do so in order to maintain a proactive approach to your health and wellbeing.

If you’re planning to get pregnant soon, schedule a preconception appointment with your OB/GYN. If you don’t feel your current GYN practitioner would be your first-choice prenatal care and labor/delivery provider, use this time to find one you feel comfortable with and schedule TeleHealth consultations.

A preconception appointment can be instrumental in picking up on little red flags that might indicate a potential infertility issue. Questions asked there, and your more specific, fertility-focused answers, may reveal things like irregular period patterns or symptoms of conditions that can impede fertility such as fibroids, PCOS, or endometriosis.

Have sex frequently – focusing on your optimal fertility window

Here’s the good news for couples who want to keep the romance alive while focusing on getting pregnant – or working through fertility treatments. Unless a male partner has a male fertility factor, studies have shown that having sex more often – regardless of fertility windows – seems to increase fertility rates.

That said, honing in on your unique optimal window of fertility is key for timing sexual intercourse at home – with or without fertility medications.

Practice gratitude, stress management, and mindfulness

It took a while for science to back up anecdotal evidence regarding psychological stress and compromised fertility. Even without that direct connection, we know that the fight/flight response to stress and anxiety compromises all aspects of physical health – including compromised immunity and inflammation.

That’s why fertility centers around the nation encourage patients to practice gratitude, stress management and mindfulness to help balance the mind, body, and spirit. Read our post on reducing your stress levels for tips on how to reduce or eliminate your fight/flight responses, which are on high-alert in our current social political climate.

Establish healthy sleep habits

We’ll leave you with this sweet reminder about healthy sleep habits. Allowing your body to get consistent, deep sleep, is key to overall health. That is especially true for women trying to conceive because many of the key hormones associated with fertility are regulated during your sleep cycles.
