Using Donor Eggs

Sometimes, the fertility journey after an infertility diagnosis brings you to places you didn’t expect – and considering using donor eggs is one of these. For certain couples, donor eggs make the difference between failed fertility treatments and/or heartbreaking miscarriages and a healthy, happy pregnancy and full-term delivery.

Donor Eggs Can Increase Your Chances of Fertility Success

If egg quantity and/or quality are issues for you and your partner, donor eggs can notably increase your chances of fertility success. This is because the eggs come from young, healthy women who’ve undergone in-depth physical and genetic check-ups. As a result, women using donor eggs benefit from the young, high-quality eggs that lead to pregnancy success.

Donor eggs are:

  • Retrieved from women between the ages of 21 and 29 years of age.
  • Considered highly-viable because the donors are carefully selected based on medical, genetic and lifestyle history.
  • Available to be selected by recipients based on ethnicity, religious background, physical attributes, talent(s), hobbies, education level, etc.

Who is a candidate for egg donors?

Typically, women who opt to use eggs from a donor:

  • Are carriers of a genetic/chromosomal defect they don’t want to pass on to their offspring.
  • Are 40-years or older and are having a difficult time conceiving and/or carrying a baby full-term as a result of age-related egg quality.
  • Experiencing early-menopause, are post-menopausal or have very low ovarian reserve.
  • Have a medical diagnosis/treatment compromising the quality of their eggs.
  • Are women with certain autoimmune disorders.

Typically, your fertility specialist will discuss egg donor options with you if they feel donor eggs will substantially alter your chances of pregnancy and a healthy, full-term baby.

Things to Consider if You’re Using a Donor Egg

There are several things to consider before making the final determination to use a donor egg:

Make peace with your decision

This is a difficult decision for many women to make because there is grief involved with the acknowledgement and acceptance that you can’t use your own eggs. Take the time to honor and process your emotions – fertility counselors are a helpful resource for this process – so you’re fully ready to embrace this next exciting juncture of your fertility path.

Costs & Timing

On average, when using frozen donor eggs, we can have the eggs available within the four-weeks it takes for you to complete a cycle. In other words, we’re ready when you are.

The average cost of using a donor egg is about $5000 to $25,000 dollars. The cost is affected by your egg donor requirements, legal fees in your area, your fertility center costs, etc. Most egg banks and/or fertility clinics offer financing options to assist you with budgeting the total expenses.
