Post-Coital Test

This test is designed to evaluate factors that influence the sperm’s ability to travel up through the cervix (or mouth of the uterus).

The sperm ultimately fertilizes the egg in the fallopian tube. Male problems that can be identified include low sperm numbers and decreased sperm movement. Female problems include poor cervical mucus development, cervical infection and antibody formation to sperm.

Your office visit will be scheduled just before ovulation is anticipated. You will be asked to have intercourse on the morning of your office visit, approximately 2 to 4 hours prior to your appointment time. You may shower, but please do not bathe or douche.

In the office, a pelvic exam will be performed and a sample of the cervical mucus and vaginal fluid will be placed on slides and evaluated microscopically. You will be informed of the results that day or by the completion of that evaluation cycle. Occasionally, this test may need to be repeated.

In an effort to properly schedule this test, please call at the start of your period to allow us to schedule the day most appropriate for your cycle. If you have any questions, please feel free to call.
